Fossil Fools Day

Press Release – Oil Free Otautahi

Fossil Fools Day

The first of April is well known by many to be a day of pranks. Oil Free Otautahi supporters are taking the opportunity to highlight the ‘foolishness’ of the National government’s fossil fuel agenda at a time when there are more environmental and economic incentives than ever to pursue a clean energy future.

They have nicknamed the 1st of April “Fossil Fools Day” and are celebrating it by dropping banners and placing posters in high traffic areas around Christchurch. A banner is intended to be put up at Victoria Street at the clock tower.

“Fossil Fools Day emphasises the short-sightedness of fossil fuel exploration in a country with so much potential to lead the world in renewable energy” said Siana, the organizer of this activity. “Anadarko’s recently failed oil drilling attempts off our coasts epitomize the desperate efforts of a dying industry; yet the government steadfastly fails to support a socially responsible shift to a green economy.”

Safety is at the forefront of the groups planning, and they have no intention of causing any harm or disruptions to Christchurch citizens. “Participants have been briefed so as not to cause damage or disruption; this is a light-hearted activity with an important message that we want to share with the people of Christchurch.”
