Free Julian Assange – May Day 2019

Press Release – Free Assange NZ

Free Assange NZ supports the principle of press freedom, especially for a media who’s mission is “to hold power to account.”

Free Assange NZ challenges New Zealand news media and journalism professionals to condemn the UK and US Government’s conspiracy to deny freedom to Wikileaks publisher Julian Assange.

Wikileaks and its founder Julian Assange are publishers who have an unblemished record of publishing information and documents from powerful entities to inform the people about that which is done in their name.

The material Wikileaks publishes is generated by governments and corporations.

The US indictment against Assange is for encouraging a whistleblower, Chelsea Manning (then Bradley) to access US Defence records and files that were subsequently leaked as the Iraq and Afghanistan War Logs. Included amongst the leaked material by Wikileaks was the brutal film of a US helicopter gunship killing 10 Iraqis in Baghdad including two (2) Reuters journalists in 2006. That video known as “Collateral Murder” assisted to alter the public perception of the Iraq War, a war that most now accept was an illegal act of aggression – a war crime whose perpetrators have thus far alluded the hand of Justice.

The New Zealand media ought report accurately on the Assange controversy.

Alternative media publish truth and support Assange. The Canary published an 18 April 2019 article refuting fake assertions made by BBC in its news reporting about Julian Assange and Wikileaks. Julian Assange is only guilty of doing his job without compromise.

Free Assange NZ is struck by the hypocrisy of UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt who announced an international conference for press freedom where he announced that international human rights lawyer Amal Clooney is crowned as a global press freedom ambassador. One week later 11 April, the UK is participating in the conspiracy to rendition Assange to the US.

Press Freedom dies where the powerful silence journalists and publishers who provide the public with the facts. Reports of the despotic acts of the powerful – reports of war crimes and corruption – stealing from the public purse.

The war criminals continue to act with impunity. These hold powerful positions in Western Governments and do their utmost to “kill the people’s messenger” Julian Assange.

Edward Wasserman professor of journalism and dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, writes in the New York Times, 26 April 2019; “Julian Assange and the Woeful State of Whistle-Blowers: As the media’s indispensable helpmates, don’t they deserve constitutional protection too?”

Free Assange NZ calls on all lovers of truth, peace and freedom, to protect Julian Assange; journalist, editor, peace lover and protector of whistleblowers who reveal and disclose war crimes, aggression, corrupt and criminal behaviour.

NZ’s Prime Minister in the Christchurch Call is making a global statement to rule out hate, amongst the population. Aggression by states is the greatest hate of all.

We call on New Zealand journalism professionals to support Assange and whistleblowers – these are the sources that feed an informed populace.
